Anti-Drunk Driving Advocates Urge ‘No Alcohol’ as Thailand Offers 10,000-Baht Cash Handouts

In Thailand, campaigners urge recipients of a 10,000-baht cash handout to avoid spending on alcohol to prevent accidents, highlighting drunk driving’s high toll of fatalities and injuries.

Anti-drunk driving advocates in Thailand are urging recipients of the government’s 10,000-baht cash aid not to spend it on alcohol. Phattarabhandhu Krissana, chairman of the Network of Victims Against Drunk Driving, emphasizes that the funds should be used for essential needs or investments to prevent accidents and potential disabilities.

The network, along with the Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation, suggests using part of the cash for vehicle taxes to support accident victim protections. Drunk driving significantly contributes to road accidents in Thailand, leading to over 284,000 casualties and substantial economic losses from 2019 to 2023.

Meanwhile, the government is distributing payments to vulnerable groups amid ongoing economic challenges. Concerns have emerged about the future of the program, as the second phase may cut payments in response to funding needs for flood relief. Despite the aid, some opposition members worry that the reduced handouts could hinder GDP growth.
