Thailand’s legalization of same-sex marriage will attract four million additional tourists annually, generate $2 billion in revenue, and boost the economy, solidifying its status as an inclusive destination.
The Love Pride Parade 2024 took place in Bangkok, celebrating Pride Month in July. Thailand recently legalized same-sex marriage, aiming to significantly boost “rainbow tourism” with an estimated four million extra visitors each year, generating around $2 billion in revenue.
The law, effective January, will also create 152,000 jobs and increase the nation’s GDP by 0.3%. By recognizing marriage registrations for same-sex partners, Thailand stands as a leader in Southeast Asia for LGBTQIA+ rights, a notable victory after years of activism.
Agoda notes that this legislation enhances Thailand’s attractiveness to the global LGBTQIA+ tourism market, valued over $200 billion. This recognition is expected to strengthen Thailand’s reputation as an inclusive destination, boosting its tourism sector, which remains crucial to the national economy.
