A Buddhist monastery in Thailand is under investigation after over 40 bodies were discovered, reportedly used for meditation practices. Authorities found 41 cadavers at the Pa Nakhon Chaibovorn monastery in Phichit province. Police are checking the legitimacy of the body donations, seeking to confirm that they were given willingly.
The head of the monastery, Phra Ajarn Saifon Phandito, described the use of corpses as part of a “meditation technique” he created. He noted that many monks come to learn this practice, which involves meditating near coffins containing human remains.
Local officials have expressed shock at the discovery. Kom Pattarakulprasert, director of the Phichit Office of Buddhism, mentioned that the inclusion of bodies in meditation is unusual. Authorities are now collaborating to determine the extent of this practice across the region.
