Thailand has attracted 26 million tourists in 2023, prompting sustainable tourism initiatives to ease overtourism in popular areas, while promoting lesser-known destinations like Chiang Dao and Lampang.
Thailand has become a top holiday destination, attracting about 26 million international tourists this year alone, with expectations for even greater numbers in 2025. Known for its breathtaking beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich gastronomy, the country is also facing challenges, particularly with overcrowded attractions.
To counter the negative effects of overtourism, Thai authorities have implemented measures such as temporarily closing national parks. Maya Bay, made famous by the film “The Beach,” was completely closed in 2018 for rehabilitation and reopened in 2022 with strict limitations to preserve its ecosystem.
As tourism is vital for Thailand’s economy, generating approximately $38 billion last year, the government is encouraging visitors to explore less popular destinations. Places like Nan and Lampang are gaining traction, with Lampang experiencing a 102% increase in tourists this year, highlighting a shift towards sustainable tourism practices and authentic experiences.
