Ekkalak Paenoi, a suspect in the assassination of former Cambodian lawmaker Lim Kimya, confessed to the murder and was extradited from Cambodia to Thailand, facing premeditated murder charges.
Ekkalak Paenoi, a 41-year-old Thai national, was apprehended in Cambodia for the assassination of former Cambodian opposition lawmaker Lim Kimya, 74. He was handed over to Thai authorities on January 11, 2025. Lim Kimya was shot in Bangkok just after arriving from Cambodia with his wife and brother.
Following his arrest, Paenoi confessed to the crime in a livestream, stating, “I confess that I did wrong.” He faces charges of premeditated murder and illegal possession of a firearm.
Lim Kimya was a member of the now-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party, which faced severe government crackdowns. This incident highlights the ongoing repression against political opponents in Cambodia, where many activists have been imprisoned or forced into exile.
