DDPM: Most accidents during Songkran festival caused by drunk driving

BANGKOK, 14 April 2019 (NNT) – Assistant to Tourism and Sports Minister, Lieutenant Commander Worawit Techasuphakoon, disclosed that the Tourism Authority of Thailand estimated that there will be more than 540,000 visitors to Thailand, while the number of Thai tourists is expected to reach three million. They are expected to generate a cash flow of over 20 billion baht, 10 billion baht from Thai tourists and another 10 billion baht from foreign visitors.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat has instructed agencies under the Ministry to cooperate with police, military officers and the public to ensure safety for both Thai and foreign tourists.

The Road Accident Prevention and Reduction Center during Songkran Festival 2019, Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), reported that there were 501 road accidents on April 12, 2019.

Drunk driving caused 35.13 percent of the accidents, followed by speeding at 29.94 percent and motorcycles were involved in 78.71 percent of the accidents. Most accidents occurred during 4.01 p.m. – 8 p.m.
