China-Thailand Joint Military Drills Equipped with ‘Every Element for a Small-Scale Conflict’

China’s joint military exercises with Thailand, Falcon Strike 2024, involve special forces for the first time, emphasizing combat readiness and enhanced cooperation to address regional security challenges.

China has announced joint military exercises with Thailand, marking the first usage of special forces and described as having “all the elements needed for a small-scale war.” The Falcon Strike 2024 drills began in northeast Thailand and will continue until August 29, showcasing a more complex approach than previous years’ maneuvers.

Chinese state media reports that these drills include cross-border support, joint air defense, and tactical training with warplanes and helicopters. Analysts suggest this significant shift from traditional joint training to realistic combat scenarios reflects growing military collaboration and shared security concerns.

As China enhances its defense relationships in Southeast Asia, it aims to counter US influence. Thailand’s unique position as the only US ally in the region allows China to expand its influence, particularly following strained ties with Washington since the 2014 military coup.
