Thailand Confirms First Case of More Severe Strain of Mpox

Thailand confirmed its first case of the severe mpox strain in a European man, raising concerns as the WHO declared the ongoing outbreak in Africa a public health emergency.

Thailand has confirmed its first case of the new strain of mpox, previously known as monkeypox. This case marks the first detection of this severe viral strain in Asia, according to health authorities.

The infected individual is a European man in his 60s who arrived in Thailand on August 14 after traveling from an African country via the Middle East. He is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.

Health officials are monitoring more than 40 people who were in close proximity to the man on his flight; however, none have exhibited symptoms. Recent reports from the WHO indicate a surge in mpox cases, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the ongoing outbreak classified as a public health emergency.
