Thailand Delays BIMSTEC Summit Until New Government Is Established, According to Foreign Ministry

Thailand postponed the BIMSTEC summit, originally scheduled for September, due to an incomplete government formation after Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s successor was not yet appointed.

Thailand has postponed the BIMSTEC summit, originally set for September 3-4, 2024, until a new government is established, as announced by its foreign ministry. This delay follows the court’s dismissal of former Premier Srettha Thavisin and the recent appointment of Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the new Prime Minister.

Currently, Thailand is operating under a caretaker government, and Paetongtarn has yet to appoint her cabinet. The postponement ensures that the new administration can effectively engage with the leaders of the seven participating countries.

BIMSTEC, which stands for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, consists of Thailand, India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. This regional summit is typically held every two years to foster collaboration among member nations.
