A tragic mudslide on Thailand’s resort island of Phuket claimed the lives of thirteen individuals, including a Russian couple, as reported by authorities on August 25. The search for missing persons has been halted following the incident, which was triggered by heavy rainfall.
The mudslide occurred near the Big Buddha, a well-known tourist attraction in southern Thailand. Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat confirmed that among the deceased, nine were migrant workers from Myanmar, and the other two were Thai nationals. Approximately 20 people sustained injuries, and 209 households were impacted.
Efforts for a significant cleanup are currently underway. The governor announced that authorities are reaching out to the victims’ relatives and their respective embassies for assistance and support.
