After Thailand’s Constitutional Court dissolved the Move Forward Party, founder Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit remains optimistic about their progressive movement, emphasizing patience and long-term goals amid ongoing political challenges.
Two weeks after Thailand’s Constitutional Court dissolved the election-winning Move Forward Party for advocating royal reform, founder Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit emphasizes that the movement is on track. Previously recognized as the visionary behind the Future Forward Party, he’s now guiding the new People’s Party. Concerns arose regarding potential protests in response to the court’s decision, suggesting a resurgence of political activism in Bangkok.
During a presentation at Thammasat University, Thanathorn celebrated the normalization of discussing royal reform, historically a taboo topic. He expressed a long-term vision for “soft landing” solutions for the monarchy, acknowledging that radical change may take decades rather than years. In an interview, he shared insights about strengthening the movement and its organizational resilience following the dissolution.
Despite fears of a crackdown, Thanathorn believes the recent dissolution united supporters and reinforced the party’s identity. He underscored the broader demand for change, noting electoral successes beyond Bangkok. Many citizens, including some royalists, recognize that reforming the monarchy is essential for Thailand’s future, although immediate street protests have not materialized due to careful strategic planning by the party.
