Thailand Greenlights Western Digital’s Hard Disk Expansion Initiative • The Register

Thailand approved Western Digital’s ฿23 billion expansion of hard disk facilities, expected to create 10,000 jobs and boost the local tech supply chain amid rising demand from hyperscale clouds and generative AI.

The Kingdom of Thailand has officially approved Western Digital’s ambitious plan to expand its hard disk manufacturing facilities. The Thai Board of Investment (BOI) announced that Western Digital’s ฿23 billion ($675 million) project will take place in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya and Prachin Buri provinces.

The BOI noted that this expansion is driven by increasing demand from hyperscale clouds and data centers, bolstered by the rise of generative AI. While Western Digital has not disclosed further details about its plans, the expansion is expected to create roughly 10,000 new jobs, enhancing the local tech supply chain.

In conjunction with Seagate, which has also invested heavily in Thailand, these firms are pivotal to the global hard disk market. Together, they account for about 80% of the world’s hard disk production, indicating Thailand’s growing importance in the tech sector.
