ตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทยก่อตั้งขึ้นภายใต้พระราชบัญญัติตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทย พ.ศ. 2517 ซึ่งถือเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของยุคใหม่ของตลาดหลักทรัพย์ไทย ตลาดหลักทรัพย์ฯ ดำเนินงานโดยไม่แสวงหากำไร โดยมุ่งหวังที่จะส่งเสริมการออมและระดมทุนระยะยาวเพื่อการพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจของประเทศ ตลอดหลายปีที่ผ่านมา ตลาดหลักทรัพย์ฯ เติบโตอย่างมาก กลายเป็นศูนย์กลางการซื้อขายหลักทรัพย์จดทะเบียนและให้บริการที่เกี่ยวข้อง
ตลาดหลักทรัพย์ฯ ได้ดำเนินการตามมาตรการที่เข้มงวดหลายประการเพื่อปราบปรามการซื้อขายที่ผิดกฎหมายและเพื่อประกันความสมบูรณ์ของตลาด ซึ่งรวมถึงระบบตรวจสอบที่เข้มงวดซึ่งใช้เทคโนโลยีขั้นสูงเพื่อตรวจจับรูปแบบการซื้อขายที่ผิดปกติและการจัดการตลาดที่อาจเกิดขึ้น
ตลาดหลักทรัพย์ฯ ยังบังคับใช้กฎเกณฑ์ต่างๆ อย่างเคร่งครัด โดยกำหนดให้ผู้เข้าร่วมตลาดทุกคนต้องปฏิบัติตามหลักปฏิบัติการซื้อขายที่ถูกต้องตามจริยธรรม เพื่อเพิ่มความโปร่งใส ตลาดหลักทรัพย์ฯ กำหนดให้บริษัทจดทะเบียนเปิดเผยข้อมูลอย่างทันท่วงที ซึ่งถือเป็นสิ่งสำคัญที่ช่วยให้นักลงทุนสามารถตัดสินใจได้อย่างรอบรู้
