The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Alipay have expanded their partnership for the ‘Amazing Thailand, A Must-visit Destination This Summer Holiday’ marketing campaign. This collaboration aims to enhance the travel experience for tourists from China, Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, and South Korea by enabling seamless payment through their home mobile wallets using Alipay+. Platforms like Alipay have become crucial in influencing travelers’ decisions on airlines, hotels, and destinations, making them increasingly important for countries like Thailand, according to Mr. Tanes.
In the first half of 2023, Thailand welcomed over 1.4 million Chinese tourists, who spent an average of 24% more on Alipay when abroad compared to the same period in 2019. This indicates new growth opportunities that Thailand plans to capitalize on through increased cooperation with Alipay. As travel resumes, Alipay is launching various summer campaigns in 2023, partnering with regional organizations like TAT. These campaigns will offer promotions on travel-related services such as shopping, attractions, and transportation. Thailand is considered the Southeast Asian destination with the greatest potential for promoting cashless spending. As part of this initiative, Alipay aims to increase tourist flows to secondary cities across Thailand.
Alipay was first introduced in Thailand in 2015 and now connects Chinese travelers with 550,000 local merchants nationwide. Thailand ranks among the top four outbound travel destinations by total transaction volume on Alipay.
