Bangkok, 25 September 2023 – October is a bustling month in Thailand, filled with festivals and celebrations that showcase Thai traditions and cultural values. Among these events are Ok Phansa or End of Buddhist Lent, Vegetarian Festival, and Sat Day or Bun Duean Sip. Additionally, the fourth edition of the Thai MotoGP takes place during this month.
Ok Phansa, which occurs on the full moon of the 11th Thai lunar month, signifies the conclusion of the Buddhist Lent. It is a joyous time of festivities and acts of merit, where each province nationwide commemorates the event on different days and with unique customs based on their local traditions.
Sat Day, also known as Bun Duean Sip or Sat Duean Sip, falls on the 15th night of the waning moon of the 10th Thai lunar month, typically in September or October. This Buddhist tradition revolves around making merits dedicated to ancestors by offering food to monks. It originated from the belief that ancestors, especially those not yet reincarnated, would be temporarily liberated from the underworld. This explains the vibrant “hungry-ghost puppet” parades that can be seen during this period. Various locations throughout the country observe this tradition in their own distinctive ways, with Nakhon Si Thammarat hosting the largest event.
